The following project is to help students understand elevation maps, the elevation of the three regions of Indiana, and reinforce important rivers in Indiana.
Materials Needed:
-Play Dough or modeling
clay in 3 colors(a great recipe for homemade Play Dough is at the bottom
of this page)
-a piece of cardboard
12" x 12" or larger
-yarn, string, or
puffy paint
Directions:
1. Draw an outline of Indiana on your cardboard.
2. Draw the three regions of Indiana and fill in those
three regions with three different colors of Play Dough or clay.
3. Look at your elevation map in your social studies book
(p.27) and show the elevations of Indiana in 3 dimensions on your own Playdough
map.
4. With your yarn,string, or puffy paint show the location
of the following rivers and label them.
5. Locate the state capital and label it with a star
and circle around it along with the city name.
6. Locate and label 5 points of interest on your map.
(Ex.- Indiana Dunes)

Play Dough Recipe

Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 T. oil
2t. cream of tartar
1 cup water
food coloring
Directions:
Cook over medium heat until a ball forms. Knead in a large zip-lock
bag for a few minutes. Remove air from bag and zip shut.
