Process Page for Teachers

Dear Teachers,
This unit is intended to supplement an in depth study of slavery and the Underground Railroad.  We make the following suggestions to aide you and your students through this webquest and unit.

Suggestions For The Teacher

Before the webquest:

-Teacher should explore this webquest and
corresponding links to become familiar with tasks
       and information.
-Teacher should assign groups of 4 students to
work together.  Students will decide which task to
       complete.
-Teacher should check with each group to be sure
that every group has someone completing each
task.  (If there needs to be more than 4 in a
group, our suggestion is to have 2 people work as
news reporters and require that they complete
more than 3 articles. It may also be helpful to have a higher level
student working as the news reporter.)
-Teacher should discuss the webquest with students
and give each student a copy of the rubric so they
know all that is expected of them.
-Teacher should give students a timeline of
activities and a final due date to keep students on
       track of completing tasks.
-Read Follow the Drinking Gourd to your class & discuss before assigning webquest

During the webquest:

-Teacher should set up a resource center for
students in the classroom consisting of trade
books, encyclopedias,  maps, and other relevant
       items for student use.
       -Teacher should actively monitor students'
progress to assess where students are in the
webquest and make adaptations or suggestions to
       students as needed.

After the webquest:

-Teacher needs to give students time to prepare
and present their final presentation (diorama, role
play, etc).  *Be sure that each person in the group
       is presenting some information orally.
