MOWRY'S APPLE ORCHARD

In September all kindergarten classes went on a field trip to MOWRY'S APPLE ORCHARD in Crown Point. The Mowrys taught us lots of things about apples and bees.

Some facts about apples:

  • Apple trees need bees to pollinate their flowers. The apple flowers turn into apples.
  • Apples come in 3 different colors: red, green and yellow.
  • If you pull an apple off the tree, you could take next year's apples. So you need to be careful and twist the apple off when pushing up on it.

Some facts about bees:

  • Bees have 5 eyes, 6 legs, 1 stinger, 2 antennas and 4 wings.
  • When a bee stings you, the stinger will stay in you and the bee will fall to the ground and die.
  • A wasp can sting you a lot of times and they can really hurt you.
  • Bees go from flower to flower to collect nectar. They take the nectar back to their hive where they make their honey to eat all winter long.
  • Beekeepers raise bees to collect honey for people to eat. Since bees pollinate our fruit, sometimes orchard owners will raise bees so that they have a good crop of fruit each year.
  • Beekeepers wear long sleeve and long legged suits with heavy gloves when they collect the honey their bees make.
