Mrs. Graves' Apple Recipes

Mrs. Graves has shared a few of her recipes with us so far this year. Obiously missing from an apple recipe page is a recipe for apple pie and we bet anything Mrs. Graves makes some very delicious apple pie. We will keep trying to coax her for one! Here is what she has shared so far:

In class we made these recipes:

APPLESAUCE

You can use lots of different kinds of apples.
Mixing different types of apples
will give the applesause a good flavor.
Wash apples.
Core and slice apples with an apple corer.
Don't worry about the skin and the seeds.
Add water and boil until
apple pieces are soft and mushy.
Put apples through a sieve or strainer
to remove all skins and seeds.
Add butter or margarine,
sugar and cinnamon to taste.

ROUND RED RINGS

Core and peel an apple,
then slice crosswise.
Cook in an electric frypan in *syrup until tender.

Cool and EAT!

Syrup
1 8-ounce package of cinnamon red hots
1 cup water
a few drops red food coloring

Mix together in frypan
to melt into syrup!

Here are some others easy enough for us to make at home:

CARMEL APPLE DIP
(Just like we had at the apple orchard!)

3 ounces softened cream cheese
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1 tablesppon white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup chopped unsalted peanuts

Mix all ingredients together well
and serve with sliced apples!

Recommendation: Double the batch!!!

NONNY'S APPLE CRISP

6 cups apple slices
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1/3 cup solid shortening
1/2 to 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Line a greased baking dish with apple slices.
Mix together with fork until crumbly:
the sugar, flour, baking powder, salt and egg.
Sprinkle over apples.
Melt the shortening, cool slightly and
pour over apple-flour mixture.
Sprinkle with cinnamon.
Bake 30-40 minutes at 350 degrees.

Variations:
Sprinkle raisins and walnut or pecan pieces
with apple slices before baking!
