Parents Page for Biology
Your child
has enrolled in Biology at H.H.S. and will have a very interesting challenge
ahead of them this year. In the 1999-2000 school year, we went to
a hands-on Biology approach which requires a large percentage of laboratory
work in experimentation along with projects. Over the course of 18
weeks, students will complete a total of 23 labs, three 4-week lab
projects, and 6-8 computer projects. The majority of the work will
be accomplished in class. However, there will be occassional homework
assignments....so look for the book that was sent home! My homepage
is the resourse guide for the students. The course outline is so
students can determine the sequence of study in class. In addition,
there are many resources and links that will help them better understand
the material that is being presented, and offer review activities for students
that need a little extra help. Two weeks of assignments are always
on my homepage...so students cannot use the excuse "I forgot what the assignment
is!", or "I have nothing going on in Biology." You should check the
assignment section and see for yourself.
My class
is geared for students to explore and discover for the full 90 minute period.
To be successful, students need to become responsible to use the time appropriately,
meet the deadlines on assignment due dates, and always provide quality
work! This class always stresses the attendence in class, utilizing
the time appropriately, and making sure that their efforts are turned in
for grading. Responsibility is
the key point here!
I normally go through a series of progressive discipline steps with inappropriate
behavior. I do not let the problem get too far before corrective
steps are made. You will usually be contacted by telephone or letter
after attempts of working with your child have not worked. I believe
that through the active intervention between teacher and parents, most
inappropriate behavior can be corrected. Since safety is a big issue
in Biology, students are taught safety rules starting with the first day.....and
practice until they leave the class. If at any time you want to contact
me...please feel free to do so! The high school telephone number
is 219-942-8521 and my voice mail is 368, or you can contact me by e-mail
at kousenclass@hobart.k12.in.us
.
I realize that Biology can be a very difficult time for some students and
parents. I am available before and after school most days.....students
can come in for extra help at lunch or if they have a study hall.
The opportunities are there for your child....but it takes the desire to
take the extra time to understand what they are missing. If I can
be of any help to you or your child...please let me know! Have a
good year!
