The Periodic Table

Halogens

The five halogens are non-metallic elements which are found in group 17 on the periodic table. Halogen actually means "salt former." Compounds using halogens are referred to as salts. Each halogen has 7 electrons in the outer shell which gives them an oxidation number of -1. At room temperature halogens can be found in all three states: solid (iodine and astatine), liquid (bromine), and gas (fluorine and chlorine).

The halogens are:

Astatine

Bromine

Chlorine

Fluorine

Iodine
