Candlemas

Candlemas is the observation of Jesus being taken to the Temple the first time. It also observes the purification of Mary who was not allowed to enter the Temple for forty days after giving birth.  This holiday is observed by the Roman Catholic and the Anglican churches during the first few days of February.

And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest: Who shall offer it before the LORD, and make an atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This [is] the law for her that hath born a male or a female.

Leviticus 12:6-7

Traditionally, this is the day that all Christmas decorations are removed and all the candles from the Christmas Season are brought together and lit from one candle. Sometimes the candles are set in the windows for others to see.  Meals on Candlemas usually include crepes, pancakes, or cakes.
