Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About
Getting Around
on the
Web

To move about the World Wide Web, you need a browser.  The most common browsers are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer.  Selection of which browser to use actually is personal preference.  Because I create web pages and use some java script in them, I prefer Internet Explorer (IE).  Not all HTML coding and java script can be read with the Netscape browser.

You can download the newest Netscape product at www.netscape.com.

Internet Explorer is included in most Microsoft products, and can be updated easily at www.microsoft.com.

When your internet cache, a holding tank for frequently and recently visited websites, becomes too full, you will notice that "surfing" from site to site becomes more slow.  Generally, this means that you need to empty the cache.  In Internet Explorer, you can do this by clicking tools on the top toolbar, and then clicking onto Internet Options.  You want to delete files.  You will note that also on this screen you can select how many days you want to retain the history of your visits.  The history will show in the IE browser along the address bar by clicking on the down arrow.  We recommend that you keep your history for 5 days if you are online most days.

To find sites with certain information, you need to use a search engine.  There are several search engines to select from:

To search for specific information, you want to include "key" words joined together with the plus sign (+), as shown in this example:  (Click to see enlarged image.)

These plus signs connect all three words so that the search engine only picks the websites with the ALL of the chosen words in them. In this case, it would keep out websites about America in general. You also wouldn't get websites about other wars or information on revolutions in other countries.
