Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About
System Software

System software controls the operations of the computer system.  It includes an operating system, such as Microsoft 2000, Microsoft NT, or Microsoft XP. These graphical user interfaces, often called GUIs (pronounce gooies), are what most people use to get around on their home computers. DOS is an example of a non-graphical user interface.

In a broad sense it also includes the programs that consist primarily of drivers which control printers, scanners, some monitors, mice, and keyboards.

Many times the system software is referred to as the "brains" of the system.  Without an operating system, the computer could not load, process, or store any data because application software depends upon an operating system to work.
