Other than its tilt on life, there isn't much to be seen on Uranus that can be seen on other planets. Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun and is one of the outer giant gas planets in this solar system. It is the third largest planet in the system with a diameter of 31,764 miles. Only Jupiter and Saturn are larger. Uranus' average distance from the Sun is 1,784 million miles and it takes 84 years for it to travel once around the Sun. Every 17 hours and 14 minutes Uranus makes a complete rotation around its axis. One of the interesting things is that Uranus rotates on a horizontal axis, which is virtually sideways in comparison to the other planets. Other planets' rotations are more vertical. This means that the seasons on Uranus are polar rather than equatorial. Where the Earth's seasons are different in each of its hemispheres, Uranus' seasons are different in each of its polar regions. One pole faces the Sun while the other pole faces away from the Sun. Like Saturn and the other gas giants, Uranus doesn't have a solid surface. It is made up of gases with maybe a small inner solid core. In its upper atmosphere there are clods that are blown by winds that can reach speeds of 650 miles per hour. There is a layer of smog near the south pole of Uranus which is probably made up of gases heated by the Sun. From Earth's view point, Uranus passed in front of a large star in 1977. Scientists on Earth noticed that the star's light was cut off five times. This told the scientists that Uranus has five rings orbiting it. Now Earth's scientists have now been able to see six more rings, which brings its total rings to eleven. The rings are to see because they are made of dust and rock and some of them do not totally circle Uranus. To keep their identity separate, scientists have named them The mean temperature on Uranus is fifty-nine Kelvin. Uranus is made up of eighty-three percent hydrogen fifteen percent helium and two percent methane. | Sun | Mercury | Venus | Earth | Mars | | Jupiter | Saturn | Uranus | Neptune | Pluto | |
