In this paragraph I will talk about the location of the Adelie penguin. Adelies are found at Antarctica. Antarctica is at the bottom of the world. Antarctica is south of the equator with very many icy waters. (A Lerner Natural Science Book 5 Picture of the Adelie penguins in Antarctica 6). These penguins can also be found at South America and, Australia. These places are almost on the equator. Penguins don’t live any further because it is warm. Penguins live in cold places.

In this paragraph I will talk about the description, characteristics and, adaptation of the Adelie penguin. Penguins are black white. Penguins have wings, but they don’t fly. When penguins go into the water they have flippers instead of wings that they use as paddles when they are swimming. You may not notice it but penguins have a layer of fat underneath their feathers to protect them from the cold. Penguins also have a waterproof coat that keeps them dry no matter what. (A Lerner Natural Science Book 5) A small average adult is usually 2 ft and 11 lbs.  (A Lerner natural Science Book 10) Adelie. Penguins have very short legs so they are slow. To get faster they lie on their stomachs and slide on the ice using their flippers  (A Lerner Natural Science Book11).

In this paragraph I will talk about the home life of the Adelie penguin.  Adelie penguins live in cold waters that flow through Australia and New Zealand. (A Lerner Natural Science Book 5) Adelie Penguins go to the coast of Antarctica to lay their eggs. (A Lerner Natural Science Book9) A rookery is places were birds’ lay their eggs and raise there young. There are more then one million birds at a rookery. The first to arrive at a rookery is the male who have mated and made nests before. One week or two later younger males and females come to the rookeries. Males and females take turns keeping their eggs warm. The males always go first. (A Lerner Natural Science Book 14). It takes thirty-five days for the eggs to hatch. (A Lerner Natural Science Book 21). After the eggs hatch and the parents are away from the rookery the baby penguins go into a crèche. (A Lerner natural Science Book 26) A crèche is a crowd of penguins together while their parents are away. (A Lerner Natural Science Book 47)

In this paragraph I will talk about something other then the location, description, hunting, defense and, home life. The Adelie penguin was named after a French explorer who visited Antarctica. Adelie penguins have courtship ceremonies. It starts with the male dropping a pebble at the feet of his mate, which is a female penguin. They start. If the female is interested the fight isn’t very long. Once the mates have been chosen the males gather pebbles for their nests (http://www.party town .com/menus/adelie.htm).

In this paragraph I will talk about how the Adelie penguins hunt and defend themselves. Here is what I know. The predator of the Adelie penguin includes the Scuas, Sea birds, Leopard Seals, Wettle seals and, Killer Whales (http://www.partytown.com/menus/adelie.htm). When penguins are in the water their black and white feathers help them to blend in with their surroundings and to hide from their enemies. An enemy swimming underneath the water finds it hard to see a penguin above on the surface because the white part of the stomach blends with the sky sunlight and water. When penguins are seen from from above their dark black blends with the darkness of the ocean depths. Even though they have this protection these penguins aren’t always able to avoid dangerous things while at sea. They’re biggest fear is the Leopard Seal. They’re fast swimmers (A Lerner natural Science Book).
