Plainfield, CT 06247
Plainfield is in Windham County which is in northeast
Connecticut, very close to the Rhode Island and Massachusetts borders. We
can drive to Boston in less than 2 hours and to New York City in 3 hours.
Our capital, Hartford, is about 50 minutes away.
Each year in kindergarten one of the children's favorite
themes is the one that involves watching caterpillars evolve into butterflies.
We plan a celebration on the sunny late Spring day when the butterflies
are released. Once we have watched the butterflies flutter off into freedom,
we enjoy a special snack that includes practicing the concept of symmetry
which the children learn about earlier in the unit. We make Butterfly Sandwiches
Butterfly Sandwiches
- 1 slice of sandwich style bread, any kind
- softened cream cheese, mayonnaise and/or peanut butter
- assortment of fruits and vegetables, chopped and sliced
into small bits (olives, raisins, carrots, apple, cherries, celery, pimento,
peppers, etc.)
- 4-6 inch thin stalks of celery
Each slice of bread is cut in half diagonally. Children
choose cream cheese, mayonnaise or peanut butter to spread on the two halves.
Then the 2 pieces are placed together, corner to corner on a plate to resemble
the outstretched wings of a butterfly. Children embellish the wings with
the bits of fruits and vegetables in a symmetrical design of their choice.
(Cereal pieces may also be used.) One 4-6 inch stalk of celery is placed
to represent the butterfly's body. (Splitting the stalk at the end can create
"antennae".)

Burlington, Ontario, Canada
Burlington, Ontario is located on the shores of Lake Ontario.
We are located between Toronto and Hamilton. We are about a forty-five minute
drive from Toronto.
Our school was involved in a drive to collect Kelloggs
labels to help win computers for our school. We decided that it was fitting
to use a recipe that used a Kelloggs product. We made our "Chews"
during a visit from Quackster, a travelling Beanie Bird from the Friendship
Club that we belong to. Here is our recipe and some pictures.
