Here is a Riddle Recipe from the kindergarten children of St. Michael
the Archangel School in Baltimore, Maryland: Can you think of a recipe that
is always different but always the same?
Friendship Fruit Salad
We ask all of our children to bring in their favorite fruit to school
then we mix them together to make a delicious "Friendship Fruit Salad"
to share with each other at snack time. It is always the same because it
is always a refreshing mix of delicious fruit but it is always different
because every group contributes their particular favorites.
We graph the amounts of the the different fruits as well as contrast/compare
them. It is a wonderfully delicious lesson. The discussion that occurs during
this social time is quite interesting and informative as they discuss their
various likes and dislikes among themselves. It is an excellent ice-breaker
for the beginning of the year.

Our 2nd grade class ended a unit on nutrition this Friday, Oct. 2, with
a nutritious snack party. We combined 2 second grades ( about 28 children)
in one room and set up a table with muffins, salad, and applesauce that
we made that day. We have been encouraging the children to eat 5 fruits
and vegetables every day. We made applesauce in the crockpot, and the muffins
were made by one of our aids. The children really enjoyed the whole affair.
I would include the recipe for the muffins, but it came from the Mott apple
site, so I wasn't sure if it was legal to send a recipe. However, below
is our recipe for the homemade applesauce.
- A peck bag of Ida Red apples, peeled , cored, and sliced into a crockpot.
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 Tsp. cinnamon
- 1/4 cup water.
Put everything in the crockpot and let cook for about 6 hours on high
stirring occasionally until ready to serve. We served in hot cups with
spoons.
By the way, we are a small school located in Mt. Morris, NY about 60
miles south of Rochester. Our town is the birthplace of Frances Bellamy--author
of the Pledge.
