Ma'ema'e Elementary
Oahu, Hawaii
Aloha,
We are a first grade class from the island of Oahu. Our school is called
Ma'ema'e Elementary. Ma'ema'e is over 100 years old and nestled in a place
called Nuuanu Valley. This is just outside of Honolulu, which is our state's
capitol. We have almost 800 students ranging from Kindergarten to sixth
grade.
We made Apple Smiles at the beginning of the year to show how happy
we were to be back in school.
Here is our recipe for Apple Smiles. It's not an original but the class
enjoyed making them all by themselves.
1. Gather the ingredients:
2 large apples
1/2 cup smooth peanut butter
mini-marshmallows
2. Cut two apples into eight slices each.
3. Remove apple cores.
4. Spread peanut butter on one side of each slice.
5. Place marshmallows between two apple slices.
6. Grin back at your Apple Smile.
Hello to all project paticipants:
Our kindergarten is a small village kindergarten. 75 students at the
age of 3 up to 6 are joining this kindergarten every morning.
On the lot there are many fruit- trees and fruit- bushes, one kitchen-
garden and a herb- bed.
During the last September week we celebrate our market every year. We
make lots of marmelade and jelly. The fruits we need will be brought from
home by the students or we collect them in the local environment.
Once the students collected too much apples and we didn't like to cook
marmelade and jelly any more. We make this delicious apples for the first
time and share them with each other at snack time.
Therefore we now introduce to you our nutritious snack, composed as
a seasons greeting from Germany to all participants.
It's named......
Colored Hedgehog
You need:
* wooden toothpicks
* one delicious apple which looks very nice
* cheese, cut into little cubes
* different kind of canned food e.g. pickled onions, cocktail sausages
* different kind of fruits e.g. pineapple, grapes etc.
First stick the wooden toothpicks into the delicious apple. Then stick
each toothpick one after the other with pieces of cheese, cocktail sausage,
pickled onions, peaces of pineapple and grapes. Of course you can add or
change the hedgehog's color and vary the kind of food used. Your hedgehog
should be colorful and attractive.
All little "cooks" can participate to make this nutritious
snack. (picture is on next page)
