All About Me

My name is Kirsten Sue Marie S., and I am 10 years old and a fourth grader at George Earle Elementary, in Hobart, Indiana.

I play offense for the Crushers in the Hobart Soccer Club.  This year the Crushers were undefeated in the Gold Division of the Northwest Indiana Soccer League.  For two seasons I competed on the Hobart Tiger Sharks Swim Team, and enjoyed it.  Since we practice every night, I decided not to join the team again.  Maybe I will join again when I am in high school.  This year I will be a Brickie Pop Warner cheerleader, and I hope to play some soccer games with the Crushers when they aren't scheduled the same time as the Pop Warner football games..

We are a reading family.  Since we moved to Indiana in 1997, the Hoosier nominees were put on our reading list.  Before I could read, someone in my family would read them to me and when I could read a little, they helped me and that is why I decided on this project.  I love animals of all kinds.  I have a dog named Coco, a cat named Smores and two anoles named Godzilla and Lizzy.

Technology is an important part of our family.  My brother, Chris, uses the phone all the time, so the rest of us use email and AOL IM to stay in touch with our friends.  Our school district is great for letting us learn computers at school. I have participated in AECT Student International Media Fairs since I was in first grade, and Miss Wilkison (3rd grade teacher at George Earle) has been my sponsor every time.

In first grade, I made a web page called "Brownie Girl Scouts, Where Girls Grow Strong," with my friend, Laurel.  We won first place at the local AIME media fair, but didn't win at the AECT competition.  Today, Laurel and I are Junior Girl Scouts in Drifting Dunes Girl Scout Council's Troop #308.

Web pages seemed hard to me, so in second grade, I used HyperStudio to complete a project about Lifelong Guidelines and LifeSkills.  I didn't win at the local AIME media fair, but I won at the at the AECT competition.  In October I went to Atlanta, Georgia to accept my prize.  While there, we were able to see President George W. Bush in a motorcade.  Since this was right after September 11, 2001, security was very tight.  We saw lots of helicopters and men on roofs near the route.

In third grade, I decided to use Microsoft Power Point to create a slide presentation about the 50 states.  The United States of America has a slide for each state which shows its capital, date of admission, nickname, flag, bird, tree, and flower.  It received First Division at our local AIME media fair and won at the AECT competition.  In October I flew to Dallas, Texas with my sponsor, Miss Wilkison, to collect the award.  We had a great time in Dallas and visited a lot of different places while we were there.

This year, I started a web page on Indiana's Hoosier Book Book Nominees for 2002-2003.  Then my friend, Amanda, wanted to do a project together and we decided to do something on the symbols of the United States.  We couldn't fit enough information on one slide, so we made God Bless America, Land that We Love a web page.  I couldn't compete against myself so I made the Hoosier Book Award Nominees into a Power Point slide show.  God Bless America, Land that We Love won best of category at the local fair and received First Division at the Indiana state media fair.  The Hoosier Book Award Nominees as a Power Point presentation placed in second division at the local media fair.

For the international fair, Amanda and I are submitting our God Bless America, Land that We Love project.  I am also submitting the Hoosier Book Award Nominees as a web page with a link to download the Power Point slide show.

This summer I will start working on another media fair project for next year, but this time I think I will only work on one.  Besides the media fair project, I will play a scrimmage before a Chicago Fire game with my soccer team, go on a camping trip to Indiana Beach with my Girl Scout troop, attend a week resident camp with the Might Acorns through the Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning Center, and travel to Ironton, Missouri with my Girl Scout troop to earn the Horse Fan and Horse Lovers badges.
