The Periodic Table

Nonmetals

There are seven nonmetals in the periodic table and they are found in groups 14 through 16. Nonmetals are not good conductors of electricity or heat. Where the metals are malleable, nonmetals are very brittle which does not make them candidates for wires or sheets. They are found in two different states at room temperature: gases like oxygen and solids like carbon.  Because they have no metallic luster they do not reflect light.  Their oxidation numbers are ±4, -3, and -2.

The nonmetals are:

Carbon

Hydrogen

Nitrogen

Oxygen

Phosphorus

Selenium

Sulfur
