Installation

This chapter should help you to install Cinderella on your computer.

General Information

You need two things to run Cinderella: the program code and a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). We included a installation software on the CD which includes JVMs for the most popular platforms. If your platform is not included, you can still be able to run Cinderella, provided that you get a Java-1.1 compatible JVM first. Please refer to the Javasoft website at http://www.javasoft.com for information on third-party Java ports and proceed to the "Java install" section in this chapter.

For you convenience we included Netscape Communicator 4.51 resp. 4.5 on the CD, which you can use to view the interactive web pages created with Cinderella. We do not support Netscape Communicator or its installation, and neither does Netscape Corp. If you already have a recent version of Netscape (4.07 or higher) or Internet Explorer (4.01 or higher) you probably do not need to install the version on the CD.

Installing on Windows 95, 98 or NT 4.0

Insert the CD into the CD drive and open it. You will find a file called "install" in the root directory of the CD. Start this program and follow the instructions.

During the installation you will be asked whether a JVM should be installed. We recommend this, but you can try to use another, already installed JVM, in order to minimize harddisk space usage. We succesfully used both Sun's "jre" as well as Microsoft's "jview". If you have trouble using a pre-installed JVM, please uninstall Cinderella again and re-install using the JVM we deliver on the CD.

You will also be asked for a shortcut location. Use the location which is the most convenient for you, e.g. the Start menu or the desktop.

After you installed Cinderella you will be able to double-click files with the ".cdy" extension in order to view or edit them.

If you want to uninstall Cinderella you can do so by choosing the "Uninstall Cinderella" shortcut.

Installation on Unix Platforms

Installing on Sun Solaris (SPARC)

Mount the CD (e.g. using "volcheck", or ask your system administrator) and change to the Solaris directory, where you find a file called "install.bin". Run it with "./install.bin" or "sh install.bin".

Follow the on-screen installation instructions. You can choose the installation directory and link locations during the install process. Be sure to choose locations where you have write access.

If you already have a Java-1.1 compatible JVM you can choose to use it instead of the packaged one, which will reduce the disk space needed by Cinderella.

After you installed Cinderella you can run it by executing the "Cinderella" link or the file "Cinderella" in the installation directory.

For uninstalling the software you can use the link "Uninstall Cinderella" or the executable found in the UninstallerData subdirectory of the installation directory.

Other Unix-like Platforms

First of all you have make sure that a Java-1.1 JVM is available and properly installed on your system. Consult the Javasoft webpages for information on third-party Java ports.

Mount the CD and change to the Unix subdirectory on the CD (you should ask your System Administrator if you do not know how to mount a CD). Run the "install.bin" script you find there.

If the installation software finds more than one JVM it will ask you to choose one. After that, the installation procedure begins and works like the Solaris version. Please read the preceding section for more details.

Installing a JVM on Linux

In order to avoid unnecessary downloads we put a version of the Java Runtime Environment for the Linux operating system on the CD. Please understand that neither Springer-Verlag nor the authors can support this software, which is provided "as-is" and without any warranties.

In the Linux subdirectory of the CD you find two versions of the JRE, one for libc5-based systems, the other one for glibc-based systems. If you are unsure about which version you need, you should read the file README-1.1.7v1a.txt in the same directory. If you are using Redhat Linux version 5.x you will need the glibc version.

Read the README-1.1.7v1a.txt file for more installation instructions. If you have problems with the installation, please consult the Java-Linux site at http://java.blackdown.org.

After you have installed a JVM you can proceed as written in the previous section, "Installing on Unix-like platforms".

Installing on MacOS

Insert the CD into your CD drive and open the CD icon that appears on your desktop. Change to the MacOS folder and run the install.bin file. You'll need StuffIt Expander for this. Then follow the instructions. If there are any problems, you might find help at http://www.cinderella.de.

We also recommend installing the included MRJ 2.1 if you have not done so before. It is up to five times faster than the standard MRJ 2.0 that comes with MacOS. You find the MRJ 2.1 in the MacOS directory on the CD. Internet Explorer will use the MRJ for displaying Java Applets. Please note that Netscape does not support Java 1.1 on MacOS (as of March 1999).

Installing on Other Java Platforms

It should be possible to install Cinderella on any platform that is capable of running Java-1.1. You will understand that we could not test the software on all these platforms, and your mileage might vary. We tried not to rely on any platform specific features which coulb be unavailable somewhere.

Insert the CD into your CD drive and find the directory called "Java". The file "install.zip" which is contained in this directory contains the complete installation software. Use your platform specific way to add install.zip to the Java classpath and run the class called "install". After that you can proceed as in the Unix install.

A possible way do the above would be to enter

jre -cp install.zip install

in a command shell. Please consult your JVM documentation for details.

Installing Using a Web Browser

If you are unsure about your platform or if you do not feel like using a command shell you can use a web browser for installation. Visit the page "install.htm" in the "WebInst" directory on the CD and follow the instructions.

Troubleshooting

If the installation fails for some reason, please check the following facts:

If none of the above causes your trouble, please visit our website for a list of known problems and workarounds.

Installing Netscape

Neither Springer-Verlag nor the authors of Cinderella take any responsibility for or support the browser software included on the CD.

We included a Java-1.1 compatible browser on the CD. You find it in the "Netscape" directory on the CD, following the structure to your platform. If you already have Internet Explorer Version 4.01 or higher or Netscape version 4.07 or higher, you should not need to install an additional browser. If you are unable to view exported web pages with interactive animations, you should install the browser delivered on CD.
