Rare Earth Metals

The thirty elements named rare earth elements are in group 3 of the periodic table. They are broken into two groups: the lanthanide series and the actinide series, also called trans-uranium, which means they are man-made.

The term "rare" is misleading.  The early chemists used this description because these elements were very difficult to separate from each other.  They were not used often in the past, although today many of these elements have many uses. (From Wikipedia)
