TEST TAKING

Test taking is a part of school whether we like it or not. Teachers use tests to see if we are understanding the information and to give us grades. When teachers give back tests, you should always look at what you missed and try to figure out why you missed it. That way tests are also ways that we can learn. If you miss a question on one test, most of the time you won't miss that same question again. Not all teachers give back tests, but we think they should.

Before the test:

  • Get a good night's sleep the night before.
  • Eat breakfast in the morning before the test. Don't eat too much because a full stomach can make you sleepy.
  • Look over the test before you start. See what questions count more. This helps you know which questions need to be answered before others.
  • Figure out how many minutes you have for each question, so you don't run out of time. If you think you might run out of time, answer the questions you know and the questions worth the most points first.

Taking a Test:

  • When you have a timed test, don't get frustrated.
  • Read the questions carefully.
  • Work at a steady pace and skip the questions you just don't know.  Don't spend a lot of time on one question; move on to something you can answer quickly.
  • When you are going back through and working on the questions you didn't answer, answer with the first thing that comes to your mind because it is usually right.
  • Always answer all questions unless you are wrong answers hurt your score more.
  • Sometimes asking the difficult questions in a different way will help you understand what the question really is.
  • Use all the time allotted for the test. If you have time, go over all the questions.  It's best if you can cover up your first answers to see if you come up with the same thing.
  • Try to figure out what the teacher really wants for an answer. Always include things they repeated in class because that is probably why the question is on the test.
  • When answering essay questions, give all the information you know about the question.  For example, if the question is, "Where do you live?" don't answer with "123 Main Street, City, State."  Answer this way: 123 Main Street in the city of Hobart, county of Lake, state of Indiana, in the United States of America which is in the North American continent of the world.
