ATTENDANCE

You need to attend school unless you are sick. When you aren't in school, you can't learn and you miss the lesson for the day. Students who have a hard time learning from just reading their textbooks have even more trouble when they miss because they don't hear the teacher's remarks about the material. Sometimes there are classroom activities done to help explain the material.

In some schools if you are absent too many times, you are retained in that grade or must repeat those classes.

When you are too sick to go to school, you need to find out what your assignments are so that when you return you are not lost. Most schools give you the number of days you missed to catch up on your work, but it is better to be caught up when you return. If you aren't, then you may not understand what is being taught the day you return, so you get further behind. Many schools have homework hotlines so students can call and get their homework assignments.

The Hobart High School hand book states,

"Hobart High School expects each student to be in school every day. The laws of Indiana also require regular attendance .Students, parents/guardians, school officials, and the Hobart community share the responsibility of assuring that a high level of attendance is maintained. Business, industry, and the professions expect and demand high standards of attendance and punctuality. Therefore the education of our students must reflect these same expectations and assist students in accepting responsibility for good attendance.  Hobart High School believes that a student that is not present cannot be taught. The interaction with the teacher and fellow students can never be effectively duplicated."

Many school websites talk about how good attendance has a direct affect on good grades.  For example, Michael Scott, President of the Chicago Board of Education, says:

"A strong correlation exists between good attendance and good grades. I challenge all of our students to set for themselves the goal of attending school every day that they can."
