I. STUDENT SAFETY AND WELL BEING

A. Attendance/Tardies

The Board of School Trustees, as a general policy, encourages its students and their parents that attendance is essential to the success of each child.

To support this policy, the administrative staff has adopted the following regulations for student attendance.

1. When a student is absent, the parent/guardian must call the school to report the illness by 9:00 a.m. The secretary will call the home if we do not hear from you. This is for the protection of the student. When your child returns to school, he/she must bring a written note explaining the absence.

2. Notice - In case of an elementary student, absences in excess of ten (10) or more days in a grading period will result in that student being placed on probation. Parents of such students will then be notified of the probation and the requirement that all future absences must be legally excused.

3. Illness - If absences are excessive, the student may be required to submit a physician's verification for further absences.

4. Students who arrive late for class (tardy) disrupt the learning of others. Punctuality will be important in the child's future, and this habit should be developed during their school years. When a student is tardy to class more than six (6) times, appropriate discipline may be imposed to remind the student and parents of the importance of punctuality.

B. Selling Merchandise at School

The selling of merchandise by students at school is not permitted unless approved by the building principal.

C. Pets, Animals, Etc.

Pets, animals, snakes, etc. are not to be brought to school except when the teacher personally requests permission from the principal for the animal to be brought at a specific time for a specific purpose in teaching. The animal must be brought in a cage that will prevent it from getting out and from causing injury to other students. If requested, documentation of current shots must be provided before bringing the pet to school.

D. Visitors

All visitors must report to the office before going to a classroom. Students can only be dismissed from the classroom after the parent or guardian obtains a dismissal slip from the office. A note should be sent with the child stating the time and reason for the requested dismissal.

E. Lunch and Recess

Students may purchase a hot lunch, bring a cold sack lunch, or go to their home for lunch. Students staying at school for lunch must not leave the school property without permission from the classroom teacher or the principal. If parents want to have their child go somewhere else for lunch, the school must be advised in advance so we know where the student is during the lunch period. Students are not allowed to frequent local restaurants unless accompanied by a parent or other adult with parent permission.

Elementary schools have a five day lunch ticket which may be purchased for $5.75 or students may pay cash daily ($1.15). The ticket is valid for any five lunches, not necessarily on consecutive days. You may purchase as many five day tickets as you need in advance. Applications for free and reduced priced lunches are available at the office of Support Services.

The student needs to bring his/her lunch ticket money (for five day tickets only) in an envelope with his name and room number on it so the ticket can be sent to the right room. The student will take his/her envelope and ticket to the cashier in line and give it to them. The next day he/she will receive his/her ticket in the classroom before lunch. The cashier will count, punch and return the tickets to the classrooms the next day. This will help eliminate lost or stolen lunch tickets.

To create a more pleasant atmosphere in the cafeteria at lunch time, it is necessary to observe the following rules:

1. Students may talk quietly to their immediate neighbors.

2. Students are to keep hands to themselves and use good table manners.

3. All food is to be eaten in the cafeteria.

4. Food sharing is discouraged.

5. A "quiet time" will be called prior to dismissal to ensure all students have an opportunity to finish their lunch.

6. Students should follow all instructions of the cafeteria supervisors.

7. Students are expected to be respectful of others as well as school property.

All students will remain on the playground after lunch and recess except those who have notes to remain indoors. Students remaining indoors with permission will be assigned a designated area. Parents requesting permission for a student to stay indoors must send a written request each day. More than three consecutive days will require a doctor's note.

F. Crossing Guards

The crossing guard program is under the direction of the Hobart Police Department. Crossing guards will be on duty at 8:15 a.m. for morning, 11:30 a.m. for noon, (11:00 - 1:00 Joan Martin School only) and 3:15 p.m. for afternoon dismissal.

We urge parents living in "crossing guard protected areas" to encourage their children to utilize the protection. The crossing guards have been provided for children's safety.
