When
you have completed this project on genetically altered foods, you will
have a clearer understanding of modern biotechnology. You will understand
how DNA
works and how scientists are able to manipulate genes to produce organisms
that are genetically different than the original organism. You will
have an opportunity to explore many different plant and animal food sources
that have been modified and placed on the supermarket shelves. You will
also have the opportunity to form ideas and opinions on the current ethical
and medical implications that are surrounding the genetic engineering of
plants and animals.
After
hearing all of the "genetic engineering teams" present their ideas, which
do you believe is the most realistic possibility? On the other hand,
which one would be the most profitable, regardless of the practicality
of the genetic alteration involved? We are talking about genetic
alteration, right? So which one would
cause the most controversy if it was introduced?
In
the future, gentic engineering
will be even more common than it is now. How do you think laws will
have to change to deal with this new biotechnology? Also, how will
modification affect the traditional classification of species? Lastly,
now that you have a clearer understanding
of the pros and cons regarding Genetically
Engineered Food, how do you personally feel
knowing
about your food, and realize that
many items already on the supermarket shelves are genetically altered?
