1.
You,
and the members of your research team, will be selected by the
teacher.
2. Each member of the group should decide
upon one
of the four professional positions of the Research
and Development Team.
3. A group leader needs to be selected and will correspond with the company President at the end of each week by e-mail.
4. Use the topic links on the RESOURCEpage for the area that each member of the team intends to investigate. You are to use ONLY the selected research sites within the links provided. You are not allowed to use other links or web sites during your class period. Any items that are saved must be placed in your "S" drive on the server. You will be given instructions on how to do this later during your project.
5. Your group needs to identify the plant or animal to alter. This may take some brainstorming on your part.
6.
Research
the animal/plant you intend to alter by looking at
it's habitat, physical makeup, and research other similar plants
and
animals on how they may be affected with this modification.
7.
Research
the production and distribution of the product(s)
which your plant or animal will be used for. Decide how your
genetic change will affect these processes, if at all.
8.
You
will research the environmental impact of your genetic
change. Will it change the environment where the plant is
grown or where the animal is raised? Will it change the
environment where the product is manufactured or distributed?
Will it change the environment where the product is used?
9.
Research the ethics of what you are doing! Is GENO-TECH
going to have trouble getting this alteration approved by the
government? What about lawsuits for health or environmental
problems? Remember, bad publicity could make the profit on
10. Will the alteration be financially profitable? Research the amount of money that could be made from this genetic alteration. (If you alter something that only a few people would buy each year, it's probably not worth all of the engineering that went into it!)
11.
Team
members will meet weekly so leader can update
Company President.
12.
While
discussing your weekly progress, you need to address the
questions asked in the TASKand
explain to the group how it relates
to developing a new genetically engineered food product.
13. After
each member has had three visits to investigate their topic, all
members will meet to discuss all the questions related in the
TASK.
At this point the group will decide on their proposed genetically altered
food product, and prepare for how their product will be presented to
Dr. Hopkins and the Scientific Community.
14. The
entire project will last for five weeks, and your team will have
access to your research and hardware two times per week.
15. The
last two weeks of the project will be devoted to preparing for
the final presentation. You, and the members of your Team will
prepare a Power Point Presentation to present to the Company
President.
16.
All members will contribute in the development and presentation of
your modified food, and will be responsible in preparing their particular
contribution to the presentation.
17.
Your
presentation should be visually appealing and factually accurate
as you attempt to persuade your critics of your money-making
invention. Remember, you are working hard to save the company, and
more important, YOUR
JOB! DO
THE BEST YOU CAN.
