William
Henry Harrison was the ninth president of the
United States. President Harrison's term was shorter than any other
President. He had only served 32 days as President when he died of
pneumonia. He didn't wear a coat or hat at his inauguration and caught
a cold.
An important event during President Harrison's
administration was:
William Harrison was
-
the first President to die in office.
-
the second President who was a resident of a state
other than where he was born.
-
the fifth President born in Virginia.
-
the last President born before the American
Revolution.
-
the second President whose father had signed the
Declaration of Independence.
-
the first President to study to be a doctor.
-
the only President who had a grandson become
president (Benjamin Harrison).
-
the first President to lie in state in the White
House.
In a speech he gave on January 26, 1841, at
Cincinnati, Ohio, he said:
"Gentlemen and fellow
citizens.... Perhaps this may be the last time I may have the
pleasure of speaking to you on earth or seeing you. I will bid you
farewell, if forever, fare thee well." |
