Rutherford Hayes was the nineteenth president of the United States.  President Hayes' wife was known as Lemonade Lucy because she served lemonade and soft drinks at White House receptions.  President Hayes and his wife did not drink liquor.

Important events during President Hayes' administration were:

• The first news dispatch was sent to the Boston Globe on February 12, 1877.

• Chief Joseph surrendered on October 4, 1877 and ended the war with the Idaho Indians.

• Thomas Alva Edison got the patent on the phonograph.

• The first meeting of the Knights of Labor took place in 1878.

• The first telephone directory was issued at New Haven, Connecticut on February 21, 1878.

• Women were allowed to practice before the United States Supreme Court for the first time on February 15, 1879.

• Belva Ann Lockwood was the first woman to practice law before the United States Supreme Court on March 3, 1879.

• James and John Ritty got the patent on the cash register on November 4, 1879.

• There were more than 50 million people living in the United States in 1880.

• Thomas Alva Edison received his patent for the light bulb on January 27, 1880.

• Church services were first held at the Salvation Army on March 10, 1880. 

Rutherford Hayes was:

• the second President born in Ohio.

• the first president sworn in on March 3rd.

• the third President inaugurated on March 5th.

• the first President to visit the West Coast.  He arrived in San Francisco in September 1880.
