The Periodic Table

Transition Metals

There are 38 transition metals in the periodic table. They are divided into ten groups numbered 3 through 12. Characteristics of the transition metals include:

  • Ductile

  • Malleable

  • Good conductors of heat and electricity

  • Valence electrons are found in more than one shell
(this causes them to have different oxidation states)

  • High strength levels

  • High density

  • High melting points

  • High boiling points

  • Form solids at room temperature (except mercury)

  • Silvery blue in color (at room temperature)

  • Form complex ions
